Casa de Luz has become one of my favorite places to eat of late. Two of my favorite things they make are sun cheese and pepita sauce. Either of these added to greens really elevates the whole "healthy eating" experience. Plus, the sauces seem to counter the bitterness of the greens. This week I found a recipe for their pepita sauce online and tried it at home tonight. I over-roasted the pepitas a little, so the color ended up light brown, when it should've been green, but it tasted excellent over blanched kale, despite looking like barf. I felt very adventurous to be cooking with ingredients I'd never used before, like ume plum vinegar. My previous experience with pepitas was when my mother would roast pumpkin seeds at Halloween after we carved the pumpkin. Except, she never hulled the seeds. I don't recommend eating unhulled pepitas.
Food is a huge part of my life at the moment. Lots of trying new things and trying to expand my vegetarian diet beyond the basics of beans, rice, hummus, and greens. A dear friend had me over for dinner recently, and dessert was fall fruit with a balsamic vinegar reduction. I'd never had anything like it, and it was quite delicious. Balsamic vinegar had already become a new favorite ingredient this year, and I will be attempting my own reduction soon, having found a simple recipe online. Because, it's all about the food!
The references to food in this hilarious (because it's so true) guide to personal ads of triathletes are so very accurate.
